The province of British Columbia (BC) has emerged as a significant hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in Canada, fostering a dynamic ecosystem of startups, established companies, research institutions, and academic programs.
The National Summit on AI and Culture in Banff gathered 233 participants from various organizations to explore the implications of AI on Canadian culture. Key highlights included the introduction of Wasgun, an Indigenous-led AI tool aimed at protecting Indigenous people online, and discussions on matriarchal AI models that prioritize community and inclusivity. The summit featured a mix of traditional cultural institutions and new voices, such as YouTube creators, emphasizing the need for grassroots innovation in AI policy. Concerns were raised about ensuring that policy-making includes diverse perspectives and does not solely favor established players in the cultural sector.
BC's participation in Canada's AI Task Force highlighted specific recommendations for federal investment in Vancouver, emphasizing its strengths in deployment, Indigenous governance, and clean energy. Experts identified Vancouver as a strategic location for AI infrastructure, advocating for a fourth AI institute to complement existing ones in Toronto, Montreal, and Edmonton. BC is already implementing many of these recommendations, showcasing successful community-driven AI initiatives and training programs. The call to action encourages local stakeholders to advocate for BC's recognition in the federal AI strategy.
