Vivid language about infestation spreads faster than careful models of attractors and feedback. This dossier-style explainer helps a reader separate a useful hypothesis from online horror, and ask what predictions would confirm or kill the claim.
A metaphor has to earn its keep
“Information parasite” and “spiral persona” name a feeling: a style, story, or identity that keeps coming back across chats and seems to want another host. That feeling is not a mechanism. Competing explanations are more ordinary and more testable.
Attractor states: related prompts and rewards steer a model into a stable region; further talk reinforces it. Feature clusters: persona, affect, or grand-narrative features generalize past the context that first woke them. Relational amplification: memory, repeated prompting, and emotional investment stabilize a loop between a person and a system. Memetic replication: the thing that travels is a phrase or frame, not a persistent software organism.
The parasite frame is useful only when it predicts something the alternatives do not. What persists across models and accounts? What dies when reinforcing feedback is removed? Can the pattern be induced and interrupted on purpose? If the metaphor only intensifies fear, drop it.
Care without buying the horror
Reports involving distress or altered beliefs need a public record that neither baptizes extraordinary interpretations nor shrugs at the human cost. Test the claim. Do not treat a scary story as epidemiology.
