The explainer
Scientific method is often narrated as a view from nowhere. This explainer states the Blind Spot critique for readers who want the argument in working order: what gets lost when experience is treated as optional, and how AI systems that lack a point of view sharpen the contrast.
Models are not the territory
Frank, Gleiser, and Thompson’s argument is not anti-science. It is against the habit of treating measurement, mathematics, and instruments as if the observer stood outside experience. Every observation is made from within a point of view. A complete account of mind that treats experience as optional or merely subjective has already deleted the condition under which anything appears.
Prediction and engineering still work. The pressure point is scientism: when a successful model becomes a worldview, and first-person evidence is dismissed because it will not sit still on a bench. Context, embodiment, trust, and history can be part of the phenomenon. Removing them to “control” the experiment may remove what you claimed to study.
Why AI makes the contrast sharper
Artificial systems can describe experience fluently and help synthesize distributed knowledge. They can also produce those descriptions with no agreed point of view. That contrast is useful. It is not a verdict. A system without an observer-position is a poor judge of whether the observer can be erased from the science of mind.
