May's Vancouver AI Community Meetup at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre gathered builders, artists, archivists, and community organizers around one working question: what still belongs to everybody in the AI age?
Andrea Mills of Internet Archive Canada spoke on digital preservation, copyright battles, and the AI Builders Fellowship, while Dr. Rachel Horst shared her path from music and arts-based research into building an anti-slop creative AI tool. Simon Haworth brought a life-sciences angle on AI and drug discovery, and Gabriel George Sr. opened the night with an Indigenous welcome.

The May 27 Vancouver AI Community Meetup at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre gathered builders, artists, archivists, open-source advocates, students, and community organizers around one working question: what still belongs to everybody in the AI age?
The public program opened with an Indigenous welcome, documented in the event video, and this draft keeps that as factual context rather than excerpting ceremonial language. From there, the night turned toward the infrastructure that lets a community learn in public: archives, creative process, open tools, research culture, and the habits that keep a shared knowledge base from being enclosed.
Dr. Rachel Horst brought the creative-process thread with her anti-slop machine, a builder's answer to the flatness that shows up when AI writing loses taste, friction, and voice. Andrea Mills brought the public-memory thread from Internet Archive Canada and the AI Builders Fellowship, connecting preservation work to the datasets, legal fights, and civic institutions that shape what future AI systems can know.
The room was less about hype and more about the institutions, archives, creative systems, and community habits that keep the commons alive. That is why the May meetup now reads like a bridge into the larger BC + AI ecosystem: the monthly stage, the native News recap series, the video archive, Film Club, MAC, and the emerging learning programs all point at the same thing. AI culture gets better when the record gets better.
