Veteran film maker Kevin Friel shares a fast, practical “Audio 101” for indie and AI-assisted filmmakers. Drawing on 25+ years of experience in animation and film, he breaks down the three core layers of sound design for short films: diegetic sound effects (Foley, footsteps, impacts), ambience that glues the emotional space together, and musical score cues that enhance what’s happening on screen rather than simply sitting on top of it. Kevin shows how to “watch with your ears,” using examples from classic film scores and his own generative UFO short, and explains why good audio instantly makes low-budget visuals feel more cinematic.
