Michel Leblond from Mind, AI & Consciousness walks the audience through big questions the group has tackled: panpsychism and whether consciousness suffuses everything from quarks to the cosmos; three competing views of free will and why MAC leans toward an open, libertarian universe; and how evolution, theory of mind, and attention schema theories might explain when genuine awareness emerges. Again and again, he asks: if these mechanisms work in us, why couldn’t something similar arise in silicon—and would that make an AI truly conscious or just very good at “crossword puzzles” of language?
