Most “AI meetups” are demo days with mood lighting. This one opened with ceremony, launched a nonprofit, and turned 1,000 voices into music. That’s not hype. That’s receipts.

Vancouver AI #20 at the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre: Indigenous ceremony, AI music from survey data, nonprofit launch.

Every month, 250+ builders, artists, researchers, and policy nerds gather to test what ethical, community-led AI looks like in practice. This is meetup twenty. We opened with song and protocol, we launched the BC AI Ecosystem Association, and a healthcare analyst turned 1,000 survey responses into a 17-track album that shut the room up and got people crying.

What’s inside

– Dean Shev — Data→Music: 1,000 BC voices distilled into 17 songs; each track maps to real community perspectives
– Jos Duncan — Justice: accountability, narrative power, and why AI needs community safeguards
– Peter Bittner — Work: the real near-term shifts in workflows and why fear is strategy’s worst advisor
– Gabriel George — Opening: Indigenous ceremony and traditional songs to ground the room
– Prajwal— Youth: 3D semantic mapping + roundtables on where it goes next
– Sev Geraskin — Tools: an interface that lets humans steer complex data without the usual friction

Big move: We formally launched the BC AI Ecosystem Association — community-led, research-linked, policy-aware. Not a club. Infrastructure.

Why it matters: Start with culture, add rigor, publish outcomes. That’s how you get practice, not press releases.
